Exeter

Exeter NH is a quiet, historic town with over 15,000 residents. Often described as a mini Portsmouth, it is graced with charming architecture, recreational amenities and sophisticated cultural assets. Beautifully restored buildings line the downtown area, including the American Independence Museum, old brick mills converted to condominiums overlooking the Squamscott River, and Phillips Exeter Academy, an elite, international college preparatory school with a reputation for educating the world’s top business and government leaders. Along the river, you’ll find many great cafes and restaurants, art galleries and boutiques...and Swasey Parkway, a beautiful greenspace popular for picnicking in the summertime. This community has one of the most substantial collections of parks and recreation facilities in the Seacoast area...including large tracts of conservation land with trails for biking and cross-country skiing, and many playgrounds, sports fields (baseball, football and soccer) and tennis courts. And with Exeter Country Club, The Rinks at Exeter and Exeter Bowling Lanes, there is truly something for everyone here! The town is known for excellent medical facilities (Exeter Hospital) and commutability (adjacent to Route 101 which connects Routes 95 and 93)...it even has its own Amtrak train station. While the property tax rate (2024: $26.78) is a bit higher than other towns, there’s a lot of value to glean. Exeter is part of School Administrative Unit (SAU) 16; there are two elementary schools, Main Street School (preschool through grade two) and Lincoln Street School (grades three through five), the Cooperative Middle School (grades six through eight) and Exeter High School (grades nine through twelve).
