New Castle

New Castle NH is a close-knit community of about 1,000 residents who consider themselves fortunate to live in the Seacoast’s most sought-after town. It is the smallest municipality in the region (by acreage, the tiniest in the state!) and consists entirely of islands...in fact, it is known as the Great Island. Located at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor, it is common to see international tankers guided up the Piscataqua River by tugboat. The ideal spot to enjoy all the boating activity is Great Island Common, a 32-acre park with beautiful green space, a beach and fishing pier. Fort Constitution, near the US Coast Guard station, and Fort Stark, at the end of Wild Rose Lane, are also lovely outdoor spaces to explore. One of the town’s most popular neighborhoods surrounds the iconic Wentworth by the Sea Hotel and Marina. The Wentworth by the Sea community offers a mix of 107 luxury homes and condominiums on ~100 acres of land. New Castle is also home to Portsmouth Yacht Club and Kittery Point Yacht Club…it is truly the hub of Seacoast cruising, sailing, fishing, kayaking and paddle-boarding! This Seacoast town has the lowest property tax rate (2024: $4.98) and the most charming post office. As part of School Administrative Unit (SAU) 50, students attend Maude H. Trefethen School for kindergarten through sixth grade, either Portsmouth Middle School or Rye Junior High for seventh and eighth grades, and Portsmouth High School for ninth through twelfth grades.
