Portsmouth
Portsmouth NH is a city of about 22,000 residents, sited along the Piscataqua River which divides New Hampshire and Maine. Because of its gorgeous location, rich historical past and vibrant culture, Portsmouth is frequently found on “Best Places to Live” lists…and for good reason! Visit downtown’s Market Square and you’ll see why. Forbes Traveler has recognized the Port City as one of America's Prettiest Towns. Prescott Park is one of its prized greenspaces with amazing gardens, brick paths and live entertainment in the summertime. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has named Portsmouth to its list of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations, calling the city "one of the most culturally rich destinations in the country with a stimulating mix of historic buildings, sidewalk cafes, great restaurants, art galleries, jazz clubs and distinctive artisan boutiques". The Music Hall was named an American Treasure by The Department of the Interior in 2003. This historic theater brings Boston-quality cultural events, performing arts and concerts to the area! There are several museums in town, including the Discover Portsmouth welcome center at Portsmouth Historical Society, and Strawbery Banke, the site of one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. The city is an important hub of commerce in Northern New England, with major highways, bus lines, Pease International Tradeport and a deepwater international seaport. The town is part of School Administrative Unit (SAU) 52 and maintains three elementary schools, one middle school and its own high school. And, for all of the amenities, the property tax rate (2024: $16.13) offers good value.
